MODULE FOUR: MY LESSON PLAN
WHAT OTHER WAYS CAN YOU THINK OF HOW TABLETS CAN BE USED
TO PERSONALISE THE LEARNING EXPERIENCES OF YOUR STUDENTS?
a) THE VAARK QUESTIONNAIRE to identify my students' different learning styles .
b) LISTENING to audio recordings as many times as they need
c) READING any text as many times as they need
d) SET THEIR TABLETS to bigger fonts, because I already use this procedure for their written tests on paper
e) SUGGEST THEM TO MAKE OUTPUTS they are good at according to their learning styles
f) GIVE FEEDBACK via e-mail (at least this has been my unorthodox approach till now).
HOW WOULD I START TO IMPLEMENT THE FLIPPED CLASSROOM IN MY SCHOOL AND CLASSROOM CONTENT?
I would suggest my headteacher, who already agrees on the efficacy of the use of tablets at school and the flipping classroom model, to use EDMODO /SHOWBIE, because it seems a COMPREHENSIVE SOFTWARE for schools, to be used not only for classroom content but also for assessment.
SHARING MY EXPERIENCE OF FLIPPING THE CLASSROOM.
By using MY WEBSITE BRITCAFE.WEEBLY.COM .
I'm an EFL teacher at a Secondary School for 11 to 13 year-old students.
I started making websites for the school by using WEEBLY.COM for free.
I had no idea of what flipping the classroom was.
I haven't produced my own video-tutorials, but I have added funny videos from YouTube about grammar structures:
a) they access material from home
b) they learn from home
c) they work at their own pace at home watching videos on grammar structures as many times as they need
d) they did exercises at home with self-check so they could re-write the wrong answers.
As the website was not implemented for all the teachers in the school, I couldn't use it to assess children, but only to make them practice the English language in an amusing way.
WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE THE KEY CHALLENGES TO IMPLEMENTING THE MODEL WITH TABLETS IN CLASSROOMS?
o The flipping of a classroom has to be acknowledged by the School as a systematic approach: all teachers have to do it, the headteacher has to ask for it, the parents have to accept it, the students have to stick to it.
o All the teachers have to create a databank of different videos or tutorials
o The teachers should be helped by some software for the personalization of learning, because it is a really hard work when it comes to that.
o Teachers have to create easy tutorials with clear examples
o All the material embedded has to be funny, because students have to learn in a pleasant way in order to motivate them
o Here I have learnt about EDPUZZLE and SCREENCASTOMATIC: fantastic tools to be used.
As a whole, in Italy it’s easier to do things “the Nike way” instead of waiting ages for things to be approved. Experimenting is an unorthodox approach, but it has been an approach for me. I only have to go on and see what happens!
